The explosion that causes a solar tsunami - Image 1It's interesting to note that some of the most spectacular phenomena aren't confined to the surface of the Earth. If you thought our planet's tidal waves were awesome, what would you say about NASA-captured footage of a solar tsunami?

According to NASA scientists, the tsunami is actually a tidal wave of pressure that travels across the sun at incredible speed. A huge explosion near the sun causes a pressure pulse to move outward in a circular pattern, which is exactly what you'll see in the video.

In case you're wondering about the energy output of such an explosion, it's about two million times the annual world consumption, and it takes place in a fraction of a second. Magnetic waves helped to propel the pressure nearly a million miles away from the epicenter of the outburst. That almost covered the full disc of the sun itself.

Note that this isn't the first time that scientists have spotted a solar tsunami; it's the first time that NASA used a twin Stereo spacecraft to record the actual event on video. While the movie is way too short, the phenomenon is still an awesome sight to behold. If you'd like to view the actual footage, just click on the source link below.
