Massachusetts-based company makes cheap solar film cells with an inkjet printer

These days, it's a cool move for a company to reduce production costs while being environment-friendly at the same time. A Massachusetts-based startup company by the name of Konarka Technologies seems to be doing exactly that, as the company has taken to using an inkjet printer to help produce cheap Power Plastic solar film cells.

While the inkjet printing process is a more recent discovery of Konarka Technologies, the company was actually recognized for its Power Plastic cells last 2005. Konarka president and CEO Rick Hess cited  the advantages of the cells, saying: "Compared to current PV technologies, the Power Plastic has an advantage in flexibility, greater sensitivity to low light and versatility."

While the the printable Power Plastic cells can be applied to a range of small-scale, highly variable power opportunities (from indoor sensors to small RFID installations) it seems that we won't be seeing these solar film cells on store shelves any time soon. Hess advises potential customers to "check back in two years and we'll have an update."
