Mars may have hosted ancient lake due to sediment-filled crater - Image 1The photo on the right reveals the shots taken by the Mars-orbiting HiRISE camera. It's a sediment-filled crater that holds proof of an ancient lake that used to exist in the planet. This could reveal if Mars was once habitable, scientists said.

The picture that's been taken shows layers of fine, clay-bearing sediments inside a certain feature known as Holden Crater.

On planet Earth, sediments of this kind come from placid, long-lived lakes. Scientists say, this type of environment is most likely able to preserve signs of habitable conditions, or even life itself during ancient times.

With this new find, a geologist from the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, John Grant commented on it by saying:

We don't know if the lake was habitable or whether there was ever any biological activity. But you've got [a lake] that focuses a sediment from a broad area into an environment where it can be preserved.

So if you want to go and look for evidence of past habitability or even life, Holden Crater would be a good place to go.
