According to Wired, scientists from a small research and development firm called Organix have come up with hybrid molecules composed of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient in weed, and anandamide, the euphoria-causing chemical found in sea urchin eggs.

THC and anandamide each have their own pros and cons: THC lasts longer, but anandamide takes effect faster. The scientists are looking for a way to create a fusion of the two chemicals that may last longer while maintaining an equal or stronger effect. The hybrids are also intended to be used for a closer study of the endocannabinoid system, which partially controls pain and pleasure signals.

Upon testing, the most potent of the molecules proved to be effective painkillers. The Organix researchers did not say anything about the possible recreational uses of the hybrid molecules, but Wired reports that Organix's structure-activity relationship (SAR) data shows that the new drugs affect the same pleasure buttons as THC and anandamide.
