A couple of engineering students from the London South Bank University developed a light-up rug called Footlume that should be interesting to see in every household. Not only does it light up to illuminate the place, Footlume also conveniently detects every footstep that pinpoint where light is going to appear.

As an electroluminescent rug, this battery-powered flooring uses photoluminescence like glow-in-the-dark objects and chemoluminescence like fireflies to produce light when weight is applied.

Co-inventor Leona Dean explained that "[Footlume] can provide ambient mood lighting or flash in time to music as a talking point at a party." As pointed out by LiveScience, it can also be helpful if you want to get back to the bed from the bathroom when you're not feeling grand.

We expect Footlume to do wonders in trying to find things around the house, though that is if the lights last long enough to be reliable in the event that you're wondering where you could've dropped something. For now, Footlume is in prototype stage and Dean together with Zoe Robson is still working out the details to push out a polished commercial product believed to "attract attention from all the right people."
