Limiting kids' video time reduces obesity - Image 1Watching way too much TV and playing too much video games have been an issue with parents who are concerned about their overweight children.

It's a good thing that researchers from the University at Buffalo have found a way to deal with it. In a two-year study, these researchers used a device that automatically restricts video-viewing time of children.

It does the trick by providing elder members of the family access to codes which turns on and of devices such as TV sets and video game consoles. On average, it was able to limit the children's viewing time to about 17.5 hours a week.

For this study, 70 boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 7 participated. The results showed that there were statistically significant changes in the body-mass index (BMI) of the children during the sixth and 12th month.

Regarding this experiment, Leonard Epstein, the first author of the study, said that:

Results showed that watching television and playing computer games can lead to obesity by reducing the amount of time that children are physically active, or by increasing the amount of food they consume as they as engaged in these sedentary behaviors.

Although the changes overall were modest, a small effect of using this simple and inexpensive intervention, magnified across the population, may produce important reductions in obesity and obesity-related health problems.

The research was supported by a grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Diseases to Epstein and by the UB Behavioral Medicine Laboratory in the UB School of Medicine

 » This is crap

Look at us in the UK. We're just as much gamers as anyone in the US, but we don't have such a huge problem with obesity. Sure it's hardly a nation of body builders, and it is getting a bit worse, but we're nowhere near your level of obesity, and why do you think that is?

It's what we eat, that's the only difference. Barring that, everything over here is almost identical. We have a clutch to use as well when we drive, but that's hardly taxing, it doesn't burn 5lbs of fat pushing it down. And that's why it's getting worse, all we're getting American companies trying to set up here now, and for some reason, most of the people here appear to like the junk. I'm pretty happy to say I'm not among them. I can hardly hold that stuff down, last time I ate a McDonalds, I was sick. And I play video games every chance I get, so video games can't be the cause of it, because all of my friends are exactly the same, we don't eat mcdonalds and the like, we play games, we're the ideal weight. The ones that do both, or just eat in places like McDonalds, probably haven't seen their knees in the past 5 years.

And don't take it as though I'm just talking about the stereotypical american. I've been there, I've seen the food and stuff, and it's no surprise so many of you are so fat. Everything's fatty and greasy. That does mainly mean for eating out and stuff, which has a huge impact on it, because you eat out a lot more often than we do, but it's not just that.

When I stayed in a villa once and we decided we'd cook some stuff ourselves instead of just eating out, it was revolting looking at some of the food in shops compared to what we're used to. The very worst thing was the bacon, what the hell have you guys got going on with that stuff? There was barely any meat on it, anywhere we looked. Here, you might get a small bit of fat on the top which is good for a bit of flavour when you cook it without making you gain a couple of pounds. But from the look of it, over there, it seems as though you'd be lucky to find some actual meat in between the layers of fat. That completely killed the idea of doing a full English Breakfast. If the rest had been like that, I would have been physically ill trying to eat one. Decided to make a salad that day instead.

America needs to stop looking for causes other than food, because that's all it comes down to. The goverment there might like the tax money, because that's going to be a huge amount, but it's killing you guys. You've really got to stop and just eat more healthy. I'm not saying go on some messed up diet, but actually use bacon, not bacon flavoured fat! Don't coat everything in a layer of sugar! And just try eat in more instead of going for the most convenient thing, you'll feel a damn sight better if you eat better, and it's not hard to make a decent meal.

while i agree with your point that video games aren't the cause, i don't think your stereotypical rant of Americans eating fat flavored fat with fat filling really helps. You know not every one of us eats that crap. Most of us actually prefer healthier foods rather than the crap some people eat.

Common knowledge it may be, but science has to be empirical about everything. :)
