Lake Mead could fully dry up in 2021 - Image 1

Research marine physicist Tim Barnett and climate scientist David Pierce from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego have found out there's a fifty percent chance that Lake Mead could dry up because of the climate change and water usage by humans.

Barnett and Pierce were able to conclude that due to human demand, natural forces like evaporation, and human-induced climate change are creating a shortage of nearly one million acre-feet of water per year from the Colorado River system, which includes Lake Mead and Lake Powell.

With their findings, Barnett said:

We were stunned at the magnitude of the problem and how fast it was coming at us. Make no mistake, this water problem is not a scientific abstraction, but rather one that will impact each and every one of us that live in the Southwest.

The researchers estimated that there's also a ten percent chance that Lake Mead could dry up in 2014. Furthermore, there's a fifty percent chance that water levels will drop too low to allow hydroelectric power generation by 2017.

In addition to this, Pierce noted that, "It’s likely to mean real changes to how we live and do business in this region." If you want to read the original report, feel free to check out the source link for more info.
