Kraft Foods - Image 1

Kraft Foods, the conglomerate known for its long product line of fine cheeses, seems to be setting their sights on a new market - one that's declared all-out war on intestinal parasites and other icky things that live in your tummy. No, they're not going to make a nanomachine army made out of cheese - instead, they're adding a new ingredient in a yet-to-be-named product that when ingested the normal way, should help flush out the innard-dwellers.

So, just what is this colon-critter-cleansing-cornucopia? Safe, edible pesticides derived from plant oils. When introduced to insects and worms, it pretty much puts their nervous systems into overdrive, causing immediate death. And with this product being introduced to some of the world's hottest spots in terms of intestinal worm infection cases (rural Asia, Africa, and Latin America), this would definitely be a good thing indeed.

But what about the effect of the plant oils in humans? R. Douglas Armstrong, chief executive of TyraTech (the company that makes the safe pesticides) says that while they haven't tested the substance on humans just yet, he says that it's impossible for us to be adversely affected by the pesticide itself. This is because that the receptors the oil attaches itself to (and overload) do not exist in humans, only in invertebrates.

Kraft Food purists concerned about the taste of the cheese need not be worried, as Dr. Armstrong also reassures that the taste can be easily removed. This is through masking with food flavors or by trying out different blends.

Modifying their products to be just a little bit healthier isn't something that Kraft hasn't done before. For instance, the Tang drink the company sells in Asia and Latin America has extra goodies in it, namely vitamins. The Eden brand cheese it sells in the Philippines also comes fortified with iodine, which helps against goiters and other nasty stuff.
