Built in the 1950s by Britain's Bristol Aeroplane Company and France's Sud Aviation for both governments to gain a foothold in the aircraft industry that was dominated by United States at that time, The Concorde is a luxury aircraft known for its speed that can reach up 1,350 miles per hour (2,172 kilometers per hour) and can cross the Atlantic in approximately three hours.

The Concorde took it's first flight on January 21, 1976 and was finally taken out of service on November 26, 2003 because of a devastating crash on July 25, 2000 in Paris that killed 100 passengers, 9 crew members and 4 on the ground. Followed by flying fears due to the 9/11 attacks, it wasn't able to recover financially.

But it seems that we haven't lost our fascination for flight. An official for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) announced, that it plans to start talks with NASA next month on developing another supersonic jet to replace or maybe even supersede the Concorde.

“Every developed country is doing some kind of research, the U.S., Europe and Russia. International cooperation is essential." JAXA spokesman Kiyotaka Yashiro said.

Japan has already successfully tested an engine that can theoretically reach speeds of up to Mach 5.5, or more than five times the speed of sound called Supersonic Combustion Ramjet – or scramjet – engine that was designed for speeds of up to 5,000 mph with 1 percent of the noise of the Concorde.

Even though the developers have suffered some setbacks like a crash on a test launch conducted last March 30, when the airplane failed to reach its target altitude and the nose cone cover failed to jettison as planned, Japan still aims to have the Concorde's successor making regular flights by 2025. But research will still be needed through the next 10 years before a prototype can be built, Yashiro said.
