Irish America Climate Project: Climate change could turn Ireland to brown - Image 1The group Irish American Climate Project has just published its report online regarding how the unabated global climate change can affect the country and make it a barren wasteland.

The study was aptly titled Changing Shades of Green. According to the group, the report is partly based on the latest work of leading Irish climate scientists.

It was then issued in conjunction with the Irish Climate Analysis and Research Units or ICARUS. Here are some of the statements made by the group:

  • Potatoes, the quintessential staple of Irish agriculture, might cease to be a commercial crop under the stress of prolonged summer droughts
  • Dried grasses in summer and autumn would change hillsides from green to brown
  • Pastures could be saturated until late spring, making it impossible for livestock to graze; instead, farmers would plant row crops to grow animal feed, a change in the look of Ireland
  • Reduced summer rains would hurt inland fisheries for salmon and sea trout
  • Bog bursts, caused when summer heat lifts peat bogs off the bedrock on hillsides and sends the bogs sliding down the slope, would be more frequent
Quite curiously, the release of the study coincided with St. Patrick's Day and so the team ended it with a hopeful note: "We celebrate the fact that it’s not too late to stave off the worst of these projected impacts. Those who wish to keep Ireland green have a role to play, and it starts with making our own green choices."
