Deafness - Image 1Good news for those suffering hearing loss, whether genetically or acquired: Dr. Jeffrey Holt and his merry band of researchers from the University of Virginia Health System have determined that hearing restoration is possible through inner ear cell gene transfer. According to Holt:

Our results show that gene therapy reagents are effective in human inner ear tissue. Taken together with the results from another group of scientists who showed that similar gene therapy compounds can produce new hair cells and restore hearing function in guinea pigs suggest that the future of gene therapy in the human inner ear is sound.

Pun intended, we think. Holt, along with his research team and Dr. Bradley Kesser, an assistant professor of otolaryngology, studied the gene KCNQ4 whose mutated form was discovered to be the cause of genetic hearing loss. They managed to create a correct form of KCNQ4 and transferred it through a gene therapy system to human hair cells taken from inner ears suffering from hearing loss. The results from the experiment were encouraging.

Hair cells in ears convert sounds into electrical signals that are transmitted to the brain to be decoded back into sound, and through Holt and his team's experiments, the possibility to restore hearing by repairing damage hair cells has been made apparent.

Holt is excited about the possibility. "This is a critically important step forward. We hope this breakthrough will propel the field of hearing and deafness research toward our collective goal of curing genetic and acquired deafness."

 » Amazing

This is amazing news for everyone, and especially for those who can't hear. I hope they can make something out of this research very soon.
