e coli bacteria - Image 1Truly, the price of development can be quite steep: according to experts, the ever growing human population and increasing reliance on antibiotics are major reasons why difficult strains of diseases keep popping up all over the globe.

As stated in scientific journal Nature, the increased contact between wildlife and humans resulting from the rapid growth of human population "is a recipe for something crossing over." That something, they say, are new diseases.

Some of the deadly diseases that were caused by contact with wildlife - often prevalent in poorer countries - are HIV, which is believed to have started from primates, and SARs, which was traced back to bats. Chinese bats.

On the other hand, the rich nations are also suffering from new strains of illnesses resulting from the constant use of antibiotics. Other factors stemming from development are also to be blamed, according to these experts.

Biologist Peter Daszak made an example out of the common bacteria, E. coli, which now spreads faster than the usual thanks to raw vegetables which are now being produced in centralized facilities. “Disease can be a cost of development,” said Daszak.

 » Yep

I always thought humans really do rely too much on prescriptions and drugs; I'm not surprised that we are more prone to these diseases. I hate to take pills and such and drink/eat real foods to get the stuff I need to fight an illness, or just have my body do the rest. If I rarely get sick, maybe others should do the same (I understand that others don't have strong immune systems though).

 » Isn't a surprise.

I'm just like you Lazyboy256, I don't like to take medicine unless I have no choice like with strep throat and the flu. Doctors have been saying this for a very long time, and people just don't care. I remember a story a while back on the news where doctors were asking people to stop using anti-bacterial soap in their homes. Yet, nobody listens because they just don't understand that the more you use a chemical to kill bacteria or viruses the more resistant they are going to become. I think the only way we will ever be able to kill diseases without any chance of them evolving to prevent it is when nano technology gets to the point that we are able to make machines that will physically destroy the cells. Of course, who knows when that will happen.

 » Yeah

I agree with the above people. But I'll toss in my urk. People who only take the medication until they are better the store the rest. People just don't realize that those two bacteria that survive are the ones most resistant to the medicine, leading to stronger, more powerful viruses. Thats why you should continue taking the antibiotics well after the symptoms end, in order to "finish off" the infection so to speak.
