Sinkhole formation in Southern Texas - Image 1When Mother Nature is having her time of the month, there are very few things that can be spared from her wrath. A recent report from BBC News noted a humongous sinkhole as long as two football fields forming in Daisetta, Texas, after it swallowed an 18-wheeler and some oil equipment.

Liberty County Sheriff Hugh Bishop was interviewed after the incident, which ended with the sinkhole growing to a size of 900 feet across and 260 feet deep. He mentioned that there was no need to evacuate homes for now, although immediate action will be taken should the hole threaten to reach civilian areas.

The reason behind the sinkhole may be linked to the collapse of an underground salt dome which dissolved due to ground water leaking into it. It was also theorized that the collapse may have been caused by the various oil drilling operations done in the area over the years.
