Horsehead Nebula - Image 1

Space will always be the last frontier - and it's not that scary a mystery when you come to think of it. After NASA showed us a solar tsunami as it happens, we now have this latest image from the Star Shadow Remote Observatory to remind us more of the splendors of space. Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you the Horsehead Nebula (click for a higher resolution).

The Horsehead Nebula is not that much of a revelation. It has been known since 1800 from a photographic plate. Rather, this image shows us the vast surroundings of the equine celestial body. The Horsehead Nebula is surrounded by an elaborate web of wisps of glowing gas and dust-filled filaments.

The length of time to create fossil fuels is a coffee break compared to the eons it took for cosmic winds to create this design. Indeed, patience is a virtue. However, those are the same winds that prevent us from landing in Mars.

Located in New Mexico, United States, the Star Shadow Remote Observatory needed seven hours of deep exposure just to get this picture. Adding the image to a full color frame took an additional three hours.

The Horsehead Nebula is located 1,500 light years away from us, camped in the Orion constellation. As you can see, two stars of the Orion's Belt are also visible.
