AIDS ribbon - Image 1Recently, Gambian President Yayha Jammeh has proclaimed that Senegalese scientist Souleyman Mboup has found a cure for the lethal AIDS disease. Now, the University of Dakar professor, Mboup, has refuted the President's claim, saying that Jammeh's proclamation about the cure was false.

The feared implication of the incorrect statement of Jammeh is that people might stop taking the anti-retroviral drugs that AIDS victims are taking because of this said "cure". However, not taking this could lead to exacerbation of the disease, and even the development of the body's resistance against the said drugs.

Emphasized Mboup, "There is no known cure for AIDS. Under no circumstance may results conducted in my laboratory be proof of an alleged cure for HIV. International rules regulate the conducting of trials in order to prove therapeutic efficacy."

In as much as this news have given false hopes to those who are in dire need of medication, what is important is that the international community is still very much on its toes searching for that cure that will greatly alleviate the plight of a large portion of mankind. But until that time comes, we'd just all have to be cautious and responsible, as well as educated about AIDS.
