SN2001igBehind the odd behavior of a rare type of supernova is a gargantuan star. The supernova, SN2001ig, has been under observation by astronomers because of unexplained changes of its cosmic stripes within weeks. Astronomers have suspected that a star was behind this when a shift from a hydrogen-rich supernova (Type II) to a hydrogen-less variety (Type I) occurred in SN2001ig. Their hunch was confirmed when they were able to see debris from the initial stellar's explosion, and at also when optical observations confirmed that a star was the cause of those unexplained changes.

The supernova, one of only two classified as a transition supernova (Type IIb), sits about 37 million light-years away from Earth in the outer fringe of the galaxy NGC 7424 while the companion star has a yellow-green color and an estimated mass of 10 to 18 times more than that of our Sun.

Astronomers hope that the companion star's presence may help them better define the evolution and aftermath of supernova explosions, and hopefully, link this new knowledge with that of the more powerful supernova relatives, hypernovas which is very important to the world of astronomy. In case you do not know, it has been theorized that the energy released by a hypernova relatively nearby might be capable of causing mass extinctions on Earth. NASA and the University of Kansas released a study in 2005 that suggesting that a mass extinction on Earth 450 million years ago, known as the Ordovician extinction, was triggered by a gamma ray burst which is a result of the hypernova.

 » 37 millions MILES ??? --> light-years

37 millions miles... It's the neighbourhood !

It's like in physics test in highschool, people find that an elevator falling from 100 meters reach the ground at a whopping... 450 000 km/s !!! and it does not surprise them of course, they write the result of their calculator as an answer.

hum... some people should UNDERSTAND what they write.

Our sun is 95 million miles, mars is about 35 mil.
so I believe you're right, "light years" should be correct.

And some groups believe that there has been up to 4 previous civilizations on earth. The more advanced we get, the easier we are to erase. they used to carve into stone, that lasts. now everything is on chips that not only require somthing seperate to read (a computer) but they disinagrate if you leave them in the sun for ten minutes.

The more advanced we get the easier we are to erase.

» Lol stupidest thing ive ever heard.

Oh really, what do you think lasts longer, a cave-carving or a huge underground military facility in the middle of a mountain? Or even a nuclear waste deposit site far below ground in solid granite.

Or maby a stone-axe lasts longer than a SATTELITE orbiting the earth? Sattelites and all the space-junk that we have orbiting our planet doesnt just fall down by its own.

Seriously, people should think for themselves before accepting the ideas of "some groups".

 » Theories...

1/ I agree that if there have been "more" civilization before, we should find trace of them...
But I read that as an example "concrete" does not last very long actually, glass also liquify in some thousand years(it is not a solid).
Still we should be finding building with stone :-) if such civilization has existed.

2/ That does not mean that brighter civilization or knowledge where not here. There is a lot of confusing things in Egyptian or Mayan knowledge compare to our current one. Please dont forget that we still DONT know HOW pyramid where build actually.(ie 100% certified)

It is funny to see how much people believe that previous generation of human beeing are seen as "stupid monkeys". You need ONE genius to change a whole society. You got 4 or 5 generation every 100 years.

Why 5000 years ago or more somebody would have not discovered locally mathematics (first and second degree equ, sin / cos ?) ? May be it could have been local, may be the knowledge was lost... who can answer surely about such thing.

3/ I believe space junk are micronized by the difference between the gravitationnal forces due to the length of the object if I am correct... (xxxx forces) And also the difference between contradictory forces (but I am not sure about this one)
Anyway about space debris this article is quite good :

 » Time

with enough time, and somthing to cause mass extinction, (i.e. a gamma burst) anything that can be made by "us" can be erased. even nuclear radiation eventually fades. I'm not saying that there isn't evidence of past civilizations burried somewhere that we havent found yet, but the point is, nothing lasts forever. and if something like that happend before it could happen again. and all evidence of any life, with enough time would be gone.

Of course, like anything else, these are only theories.
and a theory can never be proven, only dis-proven.

but thanks for making me think. I love it and I try to do the same for others.

 » Pretty sure...

Baleur, you said, "Or maby a stone-axe lasts longer than a SATTELITE orbiting the earth? Sattelites and all the space-junk that we have orbiting our planet doesnt just fall down by its own."

Now, I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that Sattelites DO in fact fall on their own. Almost all satellites, even geosynchronis are on an extremely slow fall to Earth. When talking about millions of years, then it's more like an extremely fast fall. I could be wrong, and I didn't do fact checking to verify, but I just remember this as being true...
