A good reason to drink up!Homer Simpson would be glad to hear this news report from Men's Health. Six foods often considered as doing-the-body-no-good were found to have actual nutritional value. Someone better update those "Nutritional Value" boxes on these products, then, because we're changing our diets!

  • Pork Rinds. Simply because it's pigskin doesn't mean it's cholesterol heaven. One ounce of pork rinds has nine times the protein content of an equivalent serving of potato chips, and less carbs and fat to boot!
  • Alcohol. Forget the "beer belly": a U-of-Buffalo study found that men who consume an average of two drinks a day, five to seven days a week, had less fat than those who drank only once or twice a week but consumed more than four drinks each go. So it does help to spread the alcoholic wealth across the week. Harvard scientists also found that those regular-but-light drinkers had the lowest risk of heart attack!
  • Beef Jerky. (a) rich in proteins. (b) does not raise insulin levels, the hormone which usually triggers fat storage. (c) there are preservative-free jerky brands available. Makes this the ideal weight-loss snack (For those with high blood pressure, check for all-natural brands with low sodium content).
  • Sour Cream. Maybe the percentage of fat in this dip is high, but the total amount isn't. Since sour cream is usually used for dips, the total amount eaten in a given serving is quite small, actually - unless you're into eating the whole can of dip in a serving. You get more saturated fat from a tall glass of 2% milk (Now if only the chips weren't so objectionable... see "Pork Rinds").
  • Coconut. just like sour cream, it may seem to contain more saturated fat. Even so, coconut consumption could actually have a beneficial effect on heart disease-risk factors. One fatty component of coconut, lauric acid, is found to boost good cholesterol levels higher than it does bad cholesterol levels. And the rest of the fats in coconut does relatively nothing to the heart, one way or another.
  • Chocolates. it's not just sugar and fat. Especially with dark chocolates, the most potent form of chocolates around, they contain flavonoids, the heart-friendly compounds also found in red wine and green tea. Flavonoids improve blood flow by relaxing blood vessels. And the fats? Mostly stearic and oleic, less harmful than cholesterol.
