Global warming brings new species to UK - Image 1While barkflies are quite common in UK, authorities are now reporting that a new member of its family has arrived and currently colonizing the Cornish coast.

The new species, Atlantopsocus adustus, has no English name yet and is likely to have come from Atlantic through wind and imported plants from Madeira or the Canary Islands.

This certain type of barklfy is often found in regions with warmer climate. The migration signifies that UK is being greatly affected by global warming.

National Trust's Nature Conservation Advisor Janet Lister said, "These new discoveries demonstrate that non-native species, which are used to living in warmer climes, are now able to survive here as a result of global warming".

The new species was found by ecologist Keith Alexander as part of the National Barkfly Recording Scheme. They are about 5mm in length and thrive on the bark of trees, eating lichens and algae. Its main difference from UK's native barkflies lies in its wing spots and vein patterns.

Lister clarified that this new type of species is unlikely to negatively affect UK's 99 native barkflies, "Even if the Barkfly, Atlantopsocus adustus, does become widespread, it is unlikely to have a detrimental impact on our native species because other UK Barkfly species are already using the same habitats".
