Giant robot Dextre being assembled in International Space Station - Image 1A new resident at the International Space Station hitched a ride with Endeavour which launched last Tuesday. The resident is 12 feet tall and weighs 3,400 pounds. And he's named Dextre.

Dextre is a giant robot and was only recently assembled - 11-foot arms and all. See that picture? Yeah, that's his arm. He was designed to help astronauts during spacewalks but he might end up creeping them out instead.

Garrett Reisman, who helped assemble Dextre, relates that it looks a lot like a person once fully assembled, but that he's also a little scary and reminds him of the Frankenstein monster coming alive.

Dextre, short for Dexterous, cost more than US$ 200 million, but almost didn't get to operate after a flaw in the cable design prevented the station to supply him with power. He's up and running now though, although some parts are still being assembled.

He's the replacement for the Canadarm. He's also made by the canadians.
