Giant blind salamanders and minute frogs in danger of extinction - Image 1Two amphibians are now considered to be at risk of extinction by the Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE). The reasons behind their dying breed are human activities that bring negative effects to their habitats and more precisely the harsh effects of global warming.

What makes these creature unusual are their not so ordinary capabilities. The Olm is a blind salamander that can survive for at least ten years without food. It can grow to a maximum of 1.8 meters in length. On the other hand the tiny Gardiner's Seychelles can only grow to the size of a drawing pin and spends most of its life buried four meters below the ground's surface.

Aside from their odd behavior, Jonathan Baillie head of EDGE commented that these special species are highly sensitive to various factors such as climate change and pollution. Both lead to the breed's extinction, pointing to things that might come in the future.

The group is trying to make it known to people the current state the both creatures are facing so that the people might be inspired to support EDGE'S conservation effort. On a final note, Baillie said:

Tragically, amphibians tend to be the overlooked members of the animal kingdom, even though one in every three amphibian species is currently threatened with extinction, a far higher proportion than that of bird or mammal species.
