Beelzebufo: 70 million year-old ancestor of Madagascar's horned toads - Image 1Scientists from University College of London and Stony Brook University in New York have found a fossil in Madagascar belonging to an ancient giant frog.

The find was dubbed Beelzebufo or "frog from hell." The discovery is important in many ways. For one, the 70 million year-old fossil lends weight to the theory that Madagascar, India, and South America were linked until during the latter years of the dinosaurs.

"Its diet would most likely have consisted of insects and small vertebrates like lizards, but it’s not impossible that Beelzebufo might even have munched on hatchling or juvenile dinosaurs," said Professor Susan Evans of the UCL Department of Cell and Developmental Biology.

According to the scientists, the fossil resembles modern day Horned toads in having a squat body, huge head and wide mouth. Its body length is estimated to be around 40 centimeters and its weight is billed near 10 pounds.

"Our discovery of a frog strikingly different from today’s Madagascan frogs, and akin to the Horned toads previously considered endemic to South America, lends weight to the controversial paleobiogeographical model," added Evans.
