Flying robots to aid scientists save Australian humpback whales - Image 1Amidst the various uses and functions today's robots already have, this next one is probably one of the most important ones. Accordingly, flying robots will be utilized by scientists to save humpback whales in Australia.

The said robots will do the function of doing an aerial survey and determine the exact population of the migrating humpbacks in the Land Down Under. Michael Noad of the University of Queensland had this to say:

Migrating humpbacks usually travel singly or in pairs, and often you just see their blows before they submerge again. They're spread out on a long migratory path so you have to cover a bit of ocean to find them.

The robot is going to be remote controlled and will patrol the waters off Australia's North Stradbroke Island. It will then take pictures which will provide scientists with a more accurate estimate of the animals' numbers.

This method of research has been given the thumbs up by Greenpeace. The organization added as well that this could help persuade Japan to stop killing humpbacks just for research purposes.
