Pterosaurs, the flying reptiles of Ancient Earth, have always been imagined as gull-like creatures, swooping down from their flight to pluck up their food from the ground.A new study from the University of Portsmouth claims that this image may be false. The researchers put forth a new theory, saying that pterosaurs actually hunted for their meals on land, like storks. They came up with this theory by studying azhdarchids, a kind of pterosaur. A study of their anatomy, fossils, and footprints all suggest that they were land-stalkers. They probably won't be chasing any vans from Jurassic Park on foot anytime soon though. See that picture up there? Yeah, that's a group of Quetzalcoatlus, a giant pterosaur (It was named after the Aztec god, whose name was also given to the Lightning-elemental summon in Final Fantasy 8. Why yes, I am a geek, thank you for asking). In the picture, they're stalking the prairie, plucking up baby dinosaurs off of the ground for a quick snack. Crunchy. |
