Whenever you start worrying about your problems, all you have to do is look up at the night sky for some perspective. Well, the Fox Fur Nebula as seen through the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) gives us one such perspective, and it's a beautiful one. From an astrophysicist's point of view, the Fox Fur Nebula is basically a formation of gas and dust interacting with energetic light and winds from hot, young stars. The nebula itself resembles the head of a stole made from the fur of a red fox, hence its name. You'll notice that the leftmost region in the CFHT picture is colored blue. That's because cosmic dust is reflecting bright light from the star S Mon, which lies beyond the left edge of the picture. The mottled pink and brown areas of the Fox Fur Nebula are due to dust and reddish emissions of ionized hydrogen gas. In case you'd like to locate it yourself, the Fox Fur Nebula lies in the constellation of Monoceros (aka the Unicorn) not far off from the left arm of the constellation of Orion the Hunter. |
