Faulty memory could be blamed for bad grades - Image 1According to a new research, defects in the brain's temporary storage bin, the working memory, could explain why one child fails consistently in math and another is lost when taking up history.

British researchers have found out that ten percent of school age children may suffer from poor working memory. The working memory enables people to hold and configure items in their minds, such as telephone numbers, passwords, and grocery lists.

Dr. Tracey Alloway from the Durham University compared the working memory to a box. A normal adult probably has three to five items items. If there are more than the allocated space, people will have a tendency to forget something in the working memory.

Furthermore, Alloway said that the working memory is a way to measure a child's potential. She added that some psychologists consider working memory as the new IQ since it is the single most important predictor of learning.

Don't think that everything is over since this predicament can be helped. Nelson Cowan, a cognitive psychologist at the University of Missouri, said that, "Since there is this limit, it is important to put in the right thing. Irrelevant information will clutter up working memory."

» The short short version said there is a fix...

The main science page of QJ said there is a fix or "a way to mend things." All they did was recognize the problem.

I have ADHD, mainly the AD part, which may not at all be related but any help at all is welcome.

What I have to say is that I do well in my class but my biggest problems are reading and homework. I am in an AP history class where, especially in the DBQ's, we read numerous boring OLD documents. This is amazingly hard for me and I have no idea why. Shakespear is also very hard for me to read.
In fact most reading that is not interesting to me is hard to read but not as much. Now you may say that I simply don't want to read it but actually it really is incredibly hard to think about and focus on. Even in a quiet isolated room it is STILL hard. Even worse is the same also applies to certain things I enjoy reading. For example I already mentioned shakespear, whom I verymuch enjoy the work of but it is hard for me to read even though I understand all of it. Very annoying.

Now I say all this to point out that I am extremely good at math, science, and engineering. It is still sometimes hard for me to focus on math but never impossible.
