Excavated skeleton depicts probable ancient brain surgery - Image 1

A rare specimen of a woman's remains was found in a Greek archaeological dig last year that gave more proof to the existence of brain surgery more than a thousand years ago. They say that the specimen is approximately 1,800 years old (pretty young, yes) and possessed a neat perforation on the skull, located at the left side of the front portion, just above the left eye.

Excavated skeleton depicts probable ancient brain surgery - Image 1Though the hole may appear to have been a blow by either a sharp or blunt object, scientists believe that it was the direct cause of a surgical procedure conducted back in the third century.

Ioannis Gravis, one of the archaeologists at the dig where the body was unearthed, even said, "We interpret the find as a case of complicated surgery which only a trained and specialized doctor could have attempted."

Unfortunately, experts believe that the surgery failed and brought about the death of the patient either during or some time the procedure was concluded. The body was found in a third century grave in the town of Veria, around 46 miles west of Thessaloniki, Greece.
