Institute for Advanced Architectures targeting exaflop: one million trillion flops - Image 1

A teraflop is currently the standard for a state of the art computer. Teraflop computers can calculate trillions of calculations in a second. However, the Institute for Advanced Architectures may soon render this not-so-state-of-the-art with the exaflop computer.

An exaflop is a thousand times faster than a petaflop, which is a thousand times faster than a teraflop. Boiling it down, an exaflop computer can calculate one million trillion calculations in a second. That's faster than you can say Leeroy Jenkins.

For the fiscal year of 2008, the Institute was given funding worth US$ 7.4 million by congressional mandate. The reason for the project, explains James Peery, director of computation, computers and math, is that:

An exascale computer is essential to perform more accurate simulations that, in turn, support solutions for emerging science and engineering challenges in national defense, energy assurance, advanced materials, climate, and medicine

It's amazing how technology progresses. The teraflop computer was developed only 10 years ago. Just last year, a supercomputer was developed that was powered by  PS3 Cell chips and can run 280.6 teraflops. Who knows what we'll see in the next decade. (Hopefully, a console supercomputer.)

So what? It will have no chance against the combined power of all PS3's together! BUYA!!!
