Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless MindKate Winslet and Jim Carrey had their memories of each other erased after a bitter breakup. They soon, nevertheless, found themselves back in each others' arms after the procedure, albeit, without any remote memory of their history together. Now, imagine that it is indeed possible to actually erase the memory of an event in your life.

Okay, so let's say you don't have to erase it totally. Just make it less...clear. Imagine that you won't have to go through all the process of putting away every little thing that reminds you of that "traumatic" memory. That you won't even have to have all those computer wires attached to your head overnight while sleeping, and being "tweaked" by the doctors or programmers. Imagine that all you have to do is swallow a pill. Just one little pill.

Would you take it?

This is the question that seems to grow louder as the possibility comes closer and closer. Scientists over at Harvard University have been conducting studies for some years now regarding the possibility of having a pill that would cause people to remember things less strongly. In fact, this pill is actually already existing and is being used to treat high blood pressure. The name? Propranolol.

Particularly in mind for prescription would be those people who are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome. For example, a rape victim might want to relieve herself of the agony of getting flashbacks of her assault. This pill may then help her do just that. Now, while it may seem like an all-good idea, ultimately, it cannot be helped that certain objections will arise.

Picking up from the rape victims example, some say that to take the drug may actually deter the full recovery of the victim. Instead of shrouding the memory in some obscure cloud, they have to be able to feel that they are in control of the situation. Then of course, there's the legal consideration to take. Although the drug will not 'alter' the memory in any way -just make it less intrusive- it might be used against the victim in court.

Among these and many other factors to take in, the question remains: would you take it?

there are many drugs that ruin your memory, some prescription, some entertainment. but none of them can be used to selectively erase certain memories without harming others. not possible.

yeah, this would be nice for scuicidal people, but not for the average person, 'cause it'll make your good memories less clear too. and plus, there's those memories that seem like they're good when they happen, but then you later on realize another way of looking at it and the memory becomes depressing. then you forget! and it coulda been important too.

also, if it worked correctly, it would make you forget stressfull but important things like homework or your job.

its a lost cause. you just gotta learn to live with the way you are.
