You may not have noticed it, but there's a significant increase in the need for desalinated water in the USA. As a matter of fact, each state now has at least one plant which has the sole purpose of separating salt from water for use in either agriculture or households. It's a well known fact that 97 percent of the total water in the planet is too salty to be of much use to anyone, but in some areas, there's little choice but to use either saltwater or brackish underground water for everyday living. Treatment plants are required, of course, but the financial and environmental impacts they cause are of great concern to the government. Now, scientists at Clarkson University are suggesting that the drive for a more comprehensive research on desalination be taken. They say that doing so should be grounded on the ideas of reducing costs and minimizing environmental damage. Desalination is usually done with a process called reverse osmosis. In this method, water is forced through a membrane that filters out most of the salts. While this way is effective, it certainly doesn't come cheap. In fact, Federal funding for further research on it has plunged by 40 percent in the past few years. Clarkson urges sponsors of studies on water desalination not to let up. The University says that it's closing in on developing a more permeable type of membrane that will both lower the energy cost of reverse osmosis and at the same time heighten its efficacy. The private sector seems to have responded to the call by Clarkson. Funding has increased, and the study goes on mainly because of its contributions.
