The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center team said that through cloning, Parkinson's Disease can be treated. Results from their study have been able to provide proof that through cloning, the disease could be treated effectively. In case you didn't know, Parkinson's Disease affect nerve cells in the part of the brain that is responsible for muscle movements. These cells could either die or become impaired. For their study, they developed the stem cells into dopamine-producing neurons. The cloned cells are then administered back into the mice. Since the cells are clones from the mice themselves, they wouldn't be rejected by the immune system of the mice. From then on, significant signs of improvement started to show. Regarding the results of this study, Dr. Kieran Breen from the Parkinson's Disease Society, said: This is an exciting development, as for the first time, we can see that it may be possible to create a person's own embryonic stem cells to potentially treat their Parkinson's. Researchers in this area now need to carry out more studies to satisfy safety concerns and to make the process more efficient before these studies are carried out on people living with Parkinson's. It may ultimately offer a cure, allowing people to lead a life that is free from the symptoms of Parkinson's. So far, research is still needed in both animals and humans before anything conclusive is done. Nonetheless, their initial findings could provide a way or even a clue as to how this disease can be effectively treated.
