Cloned livestock waiting for FDA clearance - Image 1

Six years ago, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) started deliberating whether or not meat and milk from cloned animals were safe for consumption. It's been a long wait but they are now expected to give their ruling next week.

Perhaps it was inevitable that meat and milk from cloned animals will enter the market ever since Dolly, the first cloned sheep, was born (in a sense). As it is, a lot of consumer groups are still opposed to seeing it happen.

Cloned livestock are expensive: cloning cattle costs US$ 15,000 to 20,000 per copy. Because of the pricetag, cloned animals will mostly be used for breeding so it will be three to five years before cloned livestock products hit the market if the FDA rules for it.

Even if the FDA rules for it, there may not be much demand for it anyway, as the VP of Dean Foods Co. comments: "Most consumers do not find this appealing." Others believe that consumers will eventually get used to the idea and won't mind.
