blind miceHere's a glimmer of hope for the three blind mice. UK scientists have successfully restored vision to blind mice by transplanting immature retinal stem cell into the eyes. This breakthrough cell transplant, if translated into a treatment for human eye disease, could help ease the burden of millions of people afflicted with eye diseases.

Previous attempts of stem cell transplants have failed because the cells weren't developed enough when the operation was performed. The setback has prompted a team of scientists to take cells from three to five-day-old mice - just the right age when the retina is about to be formed. The cells are then transplanted to the blind mice, hoping that the photoreceptors make electrical connections to the mice's retinal nerve cells, which would allow the mice to see again. And guess what? There came a Eureka moment.

Dr. Jane Sowden is pleased with the results. "Remarkably, we found that the mature retina, previously believed to have no capacity for repair, is in fact able to support the development of new functional photoreceptors."

The scientists aren't giving blind patients false hope, but we can all agree that with this breakthrough research, we can say goodbye to a blurry future.
