Canada Wants To Put Up The Organic Police

organic foodFashion has its Fashion Police. Pretty soon the organic food industry will have its own Organic Police.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)  recommended a series of ecologically stable production methods and only produce that passes it will merit a "Canada Organic" label. The organic production method includes proper soil fertility maintenance with no synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.


The Organic Police is Canada's response to the European Union's plan to regulate and certify all products claiming to be "organic" at the end of this year. The CFIA said that the closure of EU borders to uncertfied Canadian organic produce cost the industry almost $500 million over the next 10 years.

"This national organic regime would facilitate international market access, provide protection to consumers against deceptive and misleading labelling practices and to support the further development of the domestic market," said CFIA which has been been working on a certification regime since 2004.

There are about 4,000 organic produce and livestock farms in Canada worth around $1 billion. Under the current system, many organic foods in Canada are accredited by various agencies.

Organic food is defined as food produced grown without the use of conventional pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, animal antibiotics and growth hormones as well as ionizing radiation during the processing. Because different countries have different standards, "organic" products have become more of a marketing gimmick.
