These guy's can even survive a nuclear bomb, so what's a few more degrees? In a previous article, our fellow blogger Ian reported about how the world's fish population will disappear in about 50 years or so if current trends continue unabated. That may be so, a new study from the University of Washington (UW) suggests bugs could boom because of global warming.

A hotter world equals, well, a "hotter" environment for the insects, and those that adapt faster to the climate change will actually reproduce faster. According to biologist Ray Huey:

Warmer is better for insects. Species that are adapted to warm temperatures will have higher rates of population growth than species adapted to cooler temperatures.

So, hot world equals bug population explosion. "It would have consequences for agriculture and human health, since a lot of disease vectors are insects," said doctoral student Melanie Frazier, lead author of the UW study.

Frazier also echoes Huey's prognosis, saying that bugs adapted to a warmer world are also more likely to develop faster and have bigger appetites than bugs in cold-weather environments.

Not all insects will flourish in hotter temperatures, though. Right now, researchers are working on figuring out which species will be crowned winners and which will be doomed to the losers' lounge. Maybe they're getting ready to see if there are any edible bugs that'll remain once the bug boom hits, because with fish on the decline, we just might have to start rethinking our eating habits soon (not too soon, though, we hope).

Well, we guess this is what all those people who go on Fear Factor were preparing for.

Umm...care to elaborate as to how that'll happen?
