a cheesy situationBut why? After years of growing up with the notion that mice and cheese go together, here's another mythbuster heading our way: those furry little fellows don't like cheese. At all.

Yup, it sure is surprising. Now it kinda gets us to think: whoever told us it was like that in the first place? Not that it's such a big deal. But it can be really bumming especially if you wake up one day to find a dearly-held belief to be not true (imagine the day you found out there was no fat man in a red suit going around the world in one night to deliver presents).

The buster (the guy who broke the myth) is animal behaviourist David Holmes of Manchester Metropolitan University. He said, "Clearly, the supposition of mice liking cheese is a popular premise. Mice have evolved almost entirely without cheese or anything resembling it."

So what do they like? Foods with high sugar content like grains and fruit. As for cheese, they apparently don't like the strong smell and rich taste of it, so they most likely just snub it. But don't we see them nibbling at it? Or did we just imagine it?

"Mice respond to the smell, texture and taste of food, and cheese is something that would not be available to them in their natural environment, therefore they would not respond to it."

I've killed many mice in traps due to cheese, mice seemed skilled enough to eat most of the cheese away till I thought I should replace it without setting of the trap. I felt it was futile so I just left it, then I caught many trying to get that last speck under the hook. wether they like it or not doesn't matter but they eat it none the less. I notice they prefer bacon but they get it cleanly out of the traps, I think mice will eat anything they aren't fussy.

» this is a near retarded assumption.

saying mice don't like cheese is like saying dogs don't like canned food or racoons don't like bananas.
just because something isn't in an animal's natural environment doesn't mean the animal will not be attracted to it.
mice ARE mammals, they have tasted milk... milk and cheese go hand and hand.
i don't like when these people speak in absolutes. he just wants to take a theory and apply it to everything.
