Some 200 million years ago, a ten-foot-long crocodile originated in Africa, and later spread to South and North America. Called the "warrior of the sea" by scientists, this crocodile is one of the most ancient of its species known to man. This crocodile is named the Guarinisuchus munizi, whose fossils were only recently found in South America. It's a newly discovered species, which is ironic since it's one of the oldest species of crocodile we know of to date. By analyzing the remains, scientists estimate that it left Africa 62 million years ago. They believe that the crocodile was a ferocious predator, and flourished during a time when the larger marine lizards were dying out. |
