BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics, Rutgers University further adult stem cell research - Image 1

Adult stem cell technologies developer BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics Inc. has announced that it is furthering its collaboration with Rutgers University to hasten efforts in finding ways to cure spinal cord injuries.

The university, on the other hand, will be represented by one of its specialization centers, the W. M. Keck Center for Collaborative Neuroscience.

The importance of this project can't be understated, as the U.S. alone suffers from 10,000 to 12,000 spinal cord injuries every year.

When a person is so injured, the fiber tracts that carry sensation and motor signals to and from the brain are damaged. Aside from that,  the central part of the spine is also damaged, causing segmental losses of interneurons and motor neurons.

BrainStorm Cell's technology involves stem cells derived from human bone marrow that are expanded. These then are induced to secrete unmentioned neurotrophic factors. BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics President Chaim Lebowits had this to say:

Our preliminary results provide a strong validation for continuing our collaborative efforts to confirm these findings through additional testing that could, with G-D’s help, potentially lead to a new strategy for cell therapy to cure spinal cord injuries.
