Botox gets rid of more than wrinkles; FDA reports dangers of use

Botox, the cosmetic product that serves to get rid of wrinkles, has become more and more popular these days. In small doses, Botox can calm muscle spasms, but people tend to forget or ignore the fact that Botox is essentially a neurotoxin.

Reports have recently come to light of people having adverse reactions to Botox, causing symptoms such as strained breathing, difficulty in swallowing leading to pneumonia, and in extreme cases, death.

Due to this, US drug regulators are currently re-evaluating the safety of Botox in medical or cosmetic treatment. The FDA has received reports that the Botox injection can migrate from the point of injection and causes botulism, a paralytic illness.

The reported illnesses are mostly reported to have occurred among children, although adults have had similar symptoms and some have been hospitalized. The reported cases of death are among both children and adults.
