You'll never know when a species that was once thought extinct may show up somewhere else. That appears to be the case of the Borneo Pygmy Elephant, which may not really be from Borneo but from Javan, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

The WWF believes that the elephants may have been brought to Borneo centuries ago by the then Sultan of Sulu - an act which unwittingly preserved the species. The rest of the Javan elephants were hunted to extinction in the 1800s.

The WWF has conducted DNA testing on the elephants, the results of which have ruled out the possibility of Sumatra or mainland Asia as the origin of the animals. If this is indeed what happened, then these descendants of the Javan elephants may be the first case of elephant species translocation that has survived up to modern times.
