Astronomers spot galaxy without dark matter - Image 1It is generally believed by astronomers and scientists that dark matter is spread throughout the universe. This specific type of matter can't be observed directly because it doesn't reflect enough electromagnetic radiation.

The scientific community believes that it exists due to its gravitational pull on other visible objects. Quite interestingly, astrophysicists have found a spiral galaxy that seems to be empty of the stuff.

The specific galaxy in question is labelled NGC 4736 and doesn't behave like normal galaxies do. According to the scientists, the stars that can be found at the outskirts of normal galaxies move the fastest and are being held in place by dark matter.

However, NGC 4736 demonstrates that star movements get slower as you move away from the center of the said galaxy - hinting that there's no halo of dark matter as expected and  no modification to gravity.

Jurg Diemand, University of California, Santa Cruz astrophysicist, commented that if the  observations are correct, then the team involved in it has found something really interesting. Diemand added:

It is unclear how one would form a galaxy without a dark halo, or how one could remove the halo without destroying the galaxy. A galaxy without dark matter really does not fit into our current understanding of cosmology and galaxy formation.

 » ok...

A galaxy with no black hole in the centre to hold the stars and planets in rotation...strange staff indeed...

 » not black holes

dark matter and black holes are two completly seperate things from my understanding, even though it doesn't containdark matter does not mean that it does not contain black holes
