Ice melt - Image 1Climate change estimates have once predicted that a complete summer melt of the Arctic ice caps may happen between the years 2070 and 2100, but scientists in the National Snow and Ice Data Center report that it may happen as soon as 2030.

According to a new study based on the most recent satellite images of the frozen North, the ice has shrunk to an all-time low of 2.02 million square miles, a shade smaller than the previous low of 2.05 million square miles in 2005.

Scientists explain that the figure could dip further as there's still roughly a full month left before the Arctic's melt season is over and ice starts forming again.

The Northern ice sheets are critical to the stability of the planet's temperature, according to the research institution. Ice is a natural reflector of the suns rays back into space. With less ice, oceans tend to absorb more sunlight, then heat up to melt the ice further, causing a compound effect of melting.

More distressing is the fact that the skies over the Arctic Ocean are unusually clear. This means that more sunlight goes into the region, causing the oceans to heat up faster and for the melting to happen on a much bigger scale. This may result in a faster meltdown than experts have originally expected. Researcher Mark Serreze says that there's very strong evidence that greenhouse gases have a lot to do with the acceleration of this phenomenon.

Skeptics, however, say that the melting of ice is part of a natural process that will stabilize in due time, but Serreze thinks otherwise. "We simply can't explain everything through natural processes," he says.

What happens when it all melts? Will this mean more sun less rain? or will this mean no winter ever again or will this also mean no more water thus a drout? if all of these do occur what will happen is that we will all die hense no water... before the yr 3000 this planet will become a waste land or "waste world" rather..

Where do you get the no sun less rain thing?

If all the ice melted then more of land would become covered with water increasing the amount of the waters surface area. The more surface area the more that can evaporate into the atmosphere to form rain clouds. Wouldn't that mean more rain?

I don't think that the water is going to go away or become in acessible to us, and as long as there is water the earth will be able to support life.

I don't think that the earth will become a waste land but rather a massive tropical region; or that is to say that the tropical regions would expand and the artic would deminish.

matt i totally agree with you! at least there are some people with their head screwd on right. as far as global warming goes were is it right now? if it was such a thin (there may still be) west texas should be about 115 right now but its only reached 100 once and the climate has been fairly cool this summer. and besides we didnt start looking and taking records but only for about 200 year now. i say who cares

 » Tropical Region?

The worlds climate is directly affected by the ice caps. If the ice caps begin to melt, more fresh water will be released into the salt water ocean. If this happens the north atlantic current will come to a halt. The north atlantic current is what keeps the worlds climate in check. The current brings warm water from the tropics which flows at the bottom to the artic to be cooled which flows on top, then to be returned to the tropics. This directly controls the climate. If more fresh water is introduced into the ocean then desaltization occurs which means the salt water and fresh water balance will cease and warm water won't be able to pass over cold. This will throw the climate into chaos, the climate will drop over time killing crops which will starve animals which will lead to millions of people to starve as well. Then the temps will gradually rise and keeps rising , but by then there won't be anymore humans to complain.

 » chyeah!

i saw this video about glacial surfing and i have to say, wow if the whole thing cracked i couldnt imagine surfing that, it would have to be like 500 feet atleast, and jsut think!!! you could surf the same wave all day (just dont fall) and then when you get to a continent you can ride the wave like 10 miles inland then get off and fly home... wow what a trip that would be

ice is melting it isnt pushing towards the core of the earth when the ice melts it will rise not sink...

quick lets all did a big hole in the ocean to help level out the rising water lol

this is bull*****, we had temperature as high as 10 degrees above our average global temperature now in the Earth's history and the Arctic was still there...

who besides me is stoked that we actually get to witness this? All of our ancestors from way back are missing out. All they did was have sex and farm and fight each other over stupid religious beliefs. HAHA i cant wait to get flooded and see what my home owners insurance says. 'Ugh... well sir, your basically... f*cked because we have no money because 30% of america got flooded...'
