NORAD - Image 1We've seen effects of global warming range from the subtle to the stark, over the past couple of years. This latest one reported by the Pentagon itself, however, is a little strange.

Apparently, erosion in the Arctic due to warmer water crashing into Arctic territories is posing a threat to the government's NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) radar systems. The ground on which these radar outposts stand on is chipping away.

To date, three radar stations have been shut down due to erosion and budget reasons. This includes those in Point Lonely, Bullen Point and Wainwright. All three are short range radars used for monitoring areas over Alaska and Canada.

There are currently 47 of these radar systems across Canada, with the rest of the ones in Northern Alaska possibly at risk from erosion if the global warming trends persist.

The Pentagon acknowledges that erosion is posing some problems for the NORAD defense system but assures everyone that there's nothing to be alarmed about because the development does not weaken the overall Northern defense strategy.
