Adapting local ecosystems can alleviate impact of global warming - Image 1With all the things happening because of global warming, Charles Perrings, a professor of environmental economics at Arizona State University, has proposed that people should be able to diversify the ecosystems in our own backyard.

Perrings has presented his findings of the 2005 United Nations' Million Ecosystem Assessment (MA) at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting.

The MA is a comprehensive synthesis of existing information, scientific knowledge and data. It focuses on improving ecosystem management and human well-being.

With his presentation, Perrings aims to point "the value of regulating ecosystems locally to function over a range of environmental conditions." In addition to his proposition, he noted that, "the challenge now is to deepen our understanding of diversity’s impact on both the supply of valued goods and the severity of harmful events.'

Finally, Perrings noted that, "the vulnerability of many communities depends on local ecosystem structure and local biodiversity."
