Skull - Image 1In a dig site at Xuchang, a prefecture-level city of the Henan province, an almost complete fossilized human skull estimated to be around 80,000 to 100,000 years old has been discovered recently.

The skull consists of 16 pieces and was dug up last month after over two years of excavation.

This new find has been heralded by various publications and individuals as "the greatest discovery in China after the Peking Man and Upper Cave Man skulls were found in Beijing early last century."

Professor and academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Wu Xinzhi believes that these conclusions about the skull may be premature. He pointed out that the skull only provides basic information regarding Henan and the individuals living there:

It is far from the greatest judging from points such as the completeness, the time, and the significance of problems it can explain. So far, it just can prove that there were human beings living in Henan about 80,000 to 100,000 years ago and the shape of their heads was roughly what the skull shows.

While Xinzhi's conclusions might not seem so final at first glance, note that he did say "so far." This means that the skull could still potentially provide scientists with more information as further studies are conducted on it.
