Quantum Internet - Image 1 Physicists at the University of Michigan brought one of Einstein's experiments in quantum physics to new lengths. The scientists managed to change the state of one atom by manipulating another atom that's a considerable distance away. The findings could eventually lead to the construction of a quantum computer, or even a quantum internet.

The process where one atom affects another that's far away is called "entanglement" and is one of the many strange qualities of quantum physics. There's no known way of how these two particles interact with each other; scientists liken the process to flipping two coins, where the result of one affects the other.

The experiment had two atoms of ytterbium trapped in enclosures a meter apart. By entangling the two atoms, the state of one dictated the state of the other. This will still be the case even if one were taken "to Jupiter." A very mysterious quirk, and as Einstein once described it, very "spooky."

While current tech transmits data through the air or through cables, quantum tech (if developed the right way) could transmit data directly from one atom to another in no time at all, which could lead to a whole new era of quantum computers and a quantum internet.

Science is pushing the bounds of what we used to think was impossible daily. We really need to keep testing this hypothesis because we don't want to create something that we can lose control of. If Jonathan James could hack into Nasa and take control of U.S. Army computers at 16 years old, imagine what a better hacker could do in "no time at all" with this new technology. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. We need to know what we are doing before we release this "spooky" technology. And did we ever think, maybe, just maybe, some things aren't meant to be messed with. If Einstein himself called it spooky I think we should leave it alone. Look what else we thought would be a good idea. Nuclear weapons. Now we have the ability to erase our entire existence, and being human, accidents happen. Look at last week when we accidentally loaded a jet with nuclear warheads and flew it around the U.S. Sounds innocent enough, internet, computers, time travel, end of man kind. Flame me if you want. But I do make a damn good point. *BOWS*

man... this thing has infinite possibilites....

the last era of significant scientific discovery was in the 1900's...

i think we are moving towards another one soon....

With the developements of these things like Quantum Leaps, we can seriously finally have no lag in CS!! lol XD That and it will make information distribution a lot faster!!

» cool now we can have...

cool now we can have internet that it would instantly load pages and wireless keyboards that work a long way from the computer or goggles that show your computer monitor and you could be 500000 miles away and still be on your computer cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

could this also cause instant transmission in the physical world?

this must be the thing that creates the newest scientif revolution wow quantam computing and internet man wish i was born like 30 years later were these things would be a easily achieved amnemity

» This would be a great leap for those in space exploration

If this technology becomes used for communications, I don't think that consumers would see it for a long time if at all. I think that first of all this would be used in space exploration. For example: The Mars rovers, when they land, the whole process is autonomous, and it takes eight minutes just to get feedback not counting to send input, and that is at the speed of light.

I wonder if the atoms do this instantaniously or if the changes take effect at the speed of light. I personaly don't think that traveling past the speed of light is possible, but now I really don't know. I think that if these changes can occur faster that the speed of light, then NASA and other space related companies will be the first to use it effectively.

Imagine no longer worriing about radio frequency. You would have the most secure wireless connection possible.

They are just probably toying with one of the four forces that exist between objects(Gravitational force, electromagnetic force, weak nuclear forces, strong nuclear forces) so that they ended up affecting one another... lol. So technically... they won't be going faster then the Speel of Light.
And out of those 4 forces, it probably won't be gravitational force, because in Quantum Mechanics, one can (for conventional cases) eliminate the effects of gravity. [Fg+Mg; these things weigh like... something X 10^-10 KG or something... so... 9.81m/s^2 X low-ass-mass + close to zero anyways)
